School Box Africa (SBA) is an AI-powered vocational education startup that converts repurposed shipping containers into off-grid, solar-powered learning hubs for sub-Saharan Africa. Each hub runs AI-driven courses in practical, income-generating trades — agriculture, electronics and engineering — delivered over Starlink with no reliance on grid power. It is one of a new wave of applied AI projects in Africa built not for internet access alone, but to turn learners into entrepreneurs and create local jobs.

A classroom that arrives by container

Across much of rural sub-Saharan Africa, the barrier to skills isn't willingness to learn — it's the absence of teachers, equipment and reliable power. School Box Africa answers all three at once. It takes a 20-foot shipping container, fits it out as a self-contained classroom and workshop, powers it with an off-grid solar system, and connects it to the world through Starlink. Inside, students learn practical trades from an AI-driven platform rather than from scarce specialist teachers.

The model is deliberately different from "digital access" programmes that simply place tablets or connectivity in front of students. SBA is built around one outcome: economic capacity — entrepreneurs and jobs — not attendance figures.

The software is built and running

The part most AI-in-Africa projects get asked about is whether the AI is real or just a pitch. SBA's platform is live and in use today — a structured learning system with AI at its core, not a chatbot bolted onto a website:

  • An 8-chapter AI course running from foundational botany through to real-world observation and troubleshooting.
  • An embedded AI tutor inside the lesson, so a student can ask questions and get help in context, on the spot.
  • Adaptive structure — text and video lessons, chapter quizzes, progress tracking and sequential unlocking so learners move at a genuine pace of mastery.
  • Custom-course generation — the technology can build a bespoke course for a specific learner or employer quickly, instead of shipping one fixed curriculum to everyone.

A live field test in Zambia

SBA isn't theory. The founder is on the ground in Zambia now, testing the software with real learners and gathering evidence of what works. The first physical container hub is targeted for Livingstone, Zambia, in late 2026. Zambia is the launch country — registered, with an active working relationship with government and a formal endorsement in process.

One hub, then a hundred

The economics are the point. A traditional training centre is slow and costly to replicate; an SBA hub is designed to be built for roughly $32,000 in hardware, assembled in-country rather than imported, and dropped anywhere a container can go. Because the teaching is AI-driven and the power and connectivity travel with the box, each new hub needs neither local infrastructure nor a full specialist faculty.

Scale is also being built through people. SBA runs a Country Partner Programme — senior in-country leaders whose mission is to secure government endorsement, institutional partnerships and local funding. Three country directors are now driving that work in Ethiopia, Botswana and South Africa, extending the model's reach well beyond Zambia.

A team, and an audience, that's growing

School Box Africa is early-stage and building in the open. Its audience is growing across LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, where the journey — from software to shipping container — is documented as it happens. Behind the channels, the team is expanding too: three in-country directors, a cohort of volunteers contributing across the project, and pro bono professional advisers, including a UK chartered accountant who built a detailed long-range financial model. Institutional momentum is building through connections to AfriLabs, Africa's largest network of innovation hubs.

The project has been built on a £3,500 seed grant plus a large amount of in-kind expertise, and is now seeking Phase 1 funding to deploy its first hubs — exactly the kind of applied, outcome-focused AI initiative that development funders and AI-for-good programmes are actively looking for.
